Fatoumata Adelle Barry, Bsc, MD, MPH
Fatoumata before everything, is a daughter of Niger, and an eternal lover of books and words (written and spoken).
Dr. Barry is known as the Art-Scientist from Niger, being an award-winning writer, physician, and public health professional experienced in both research, advocacy, and project management both for community & international organizations as well as for research institutions in the African Sahel region and USA.
She is currently a research program manager at the Johns Hopkins Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center, working on various global oncology projects across different African Countries, at the intersection of health, industry, and research. At the same time, she volunteers as the National Advocacy lead for the Niger Chapter of Women Leaders in Global Health Movement. Her personal research and writings focus on Cancer, Mental Health, specifically in Cancer patients, and in crisis affected populations as well as Youth and Women leadership in Health.
She has more than a decade experience in leadership, and advocacy in Africa on social development, youth & women empowerment. She founded an NGO in 2018, collaborating with local institutions and cultural organizations to promotes excellence among thousands of young people in Niger, and women leadership as the National Advocacy lead for the Women Leaders in Global Health Niger Chapter aiming at increasing women representation in leadership position within the public health architecture.
Her service goes beyond the borders of the Sahel region, where she served as the President of the African Public Health Network at the Johns Hopkins where she set the vision to promote African public health champions while bridging the expertise to create more impact in addressing challenges.
She is the author of two books, her poems were published in two anthologies on rethinking Africa titled soaring Africa with young African poets’ laureate of a West African poetry contest by OSIWA and led by the famous writers Breyten Breytenbach in 2015and and Veronique Tadjo & 120 Nuances of Africa along with poems of Maya Angelou, Toni Morisson, Hawad in 2017. Her short story titeld “Une vie de daube” on gender-based violence against a woman, was featured in a college book for literature and French classes and many articles.
She won several writing awards on 3 continents and received six (6) distinctions in Leadership, acknowledged by 3 Country Presidents and world leaders on 3 continents.
She holds a Medical Doctor degree from the Abdou Moumouni University of Niamey with the award of National Contest for “My Thesis in 180s”, a Master of Public Health in Health Systems and Policy & a certificate in Health Finance and Management from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, – the first from Niger to do so as Fulbright and Sommer scholar, where she graduated with different honors including the highest recognition of Johns Hopkins – the Student of the Year Award and inducted into the prestigious Delta Omega Public Health Honorary Society.
She also holds a Certificate in Public Management from Georgia State University, under the flagship of the Obama program – Mandela Washington Fellowship Program, a Certificate in Leadership in Public Management from CESAG in Dakar, Senegal, and Bachelor of Science degree in communication.
